President's Lawn Tents and tables of all sizes and colors were arrayed on the green newly-mowed hillside grass. The aroma of grilled hamburgers, corn on the cob, and slowly baking potatoes welcomed incoming students and their families to President's House lawn .

Last year, it was running back Gerald Sun who first walked purposely across President's Lawn and -- under the "Welcome Football Team" banner -- introduced himself. This year, Gerry was not alone. With him, from the same High School in the Los Angeles suburbs, was his younger brother, Marvin Sun.

Only two days ago, Huygens Tech’s other Running Back, mountain biker from Truckee, Dick "B2” Beatie, had walked into Griff's office on crutches. "Bad News, Coach."

But, two Chinese Running Backs on the same team was a first. Griff grinned. "Marv is good name for a Running Back."

In Griff's memory, it was last year, Saturday, September 16, late in the game. Just outside the red zone, the Sacramento Valley Secondary lurked like a gathering of hungry grizzly bears. Fourth and 3. River handed the ball to Gerry. The Offensive Line opened a barely visible zigzag path. Sun slipped through it unscathed.

Touchdown.

The band played Gerry's song:

"Ask heaven, ask earth
"How many more miles to go?"
