Huygens lost the toss. The Rogue River Eagles elected to take the field first. Many times since he began playing football in High School, Griff had watched with dismay when the opposing team took the field first. Even when his coaches of the past elected to defer until the opening of the second half, he watched with envy as the opposition took the field first. It was like standing uselessly in the outfield when the opposing batter hits a single.

Most football teams chose to defer, but unless the weather might improve later, Griff usually chose to take the field first. There was a power to running on the field first -- an energy that his team carried throughout the game. Defense Coach Kekoa Alualu was not in agreement with Griff on this issue.

Rocco Raccugli, formerly Palermo F.C., Sicily, punted the ball deep into the End Zone. Right Defensive Tackle Darnell Medina and Left Defensive Tackle Noah Bailey took their places. Their places, Kekoa thought to himself, was in the D-line. It was not waiting on the bench absorbed in discussion of computer game strategy -- while the offence took the field. From Camden New Jersey, Cornerback Terrell Orsino Washington took his place just behind the row of linebackers. Downfield, Safety Eddy Gabe, Black Creole from New Orleans, watched the Eagles Center snap the ball to Tor Hansen Murphy.

Slant pass to Eagles Wide Receiver, Lord John. Two yards short of the down, the new Linebacker Adohi Ross (Cherokee) and Terrell hit Lord John hard.

The Eagles, Kekoa observed, were lining up for a run. Hand-off to JosJeff Brown. Looked as if JosJeff would thread the needle and run clear, but Kekoa was not concerned.

arrow From one side Noah converged on JosJeff; Darnell met JosJeff from the other side. JosJeff moved backwards. The Eagles O-line piled on top. Players from both teams helped each other up.
