"As you men in Defense will recall, because you were all there, in the first possession of the game with no huddle passes, Jed Beau and his experienced offense drove to our 30; completed the drive with a 31 yard pass to the end zone. The game had just begun; the score was Humboldt 7 – Huygens 0. "
A chorus of boos issued from the back of the room.
"When our Offense took the field, the first thing I observed was that the Humboldt Defensive Ends looked about 6' 6" and 290 pounds. Each, nearly twice the height, nearly twice the weight of our star Running Back Gerald Sun." The room was silent. Griff picked up a stray football, throw it to River.
"In the first drive I ever led for Huygens," River began. "I handed the ball to Gerry. Dodging confused Humboldt tackles, Gerry took the ball twenty yards. I threw a short completed slant to The Baron; he was pushed back two yards. Then, the way I remember it, DeJuan was heading perfectly into the pass receiving route when In the stands, my father appeared, holding a ‘River, pack your bags’ sign. I looked up. Three Humboldt defenders took me down. Back to you Coach.“
Griff picked off River's across the film room wild pass. "A few possessions later, once again Jed Beau moved the Rangers to the red zone. His subsequent pass to a receiver in the end zone would have been completed if it hadn't been intercepted by a Cornerback from my wife's home state. Obviously trying to decide whether to fall down or run with the ball, Terrell looked at me. I pointed to the Humboldt end zone 100 yards away.“
An hour or so later (in the retelling), energized by Terrell's interception touchdown, the score was closer than expected, but in the game, less than half a minute remained. Coach McGuire held the stage. "The Score Was Huygens 31 Humboldt 32. We were at the Humboldt 30 Yard Line."
Into the film room strode strode Will O'Arragan. "Big Dog snapped the ball to Rocco. I kicked it perfectly through the center of the goal posts. Huygens 34 Humboldt 32."
