For the first pre-game lunch of the football season, gathered at the Huygens Faculty Club were Head Coach, Griff McGuire, Offensive Line Coach, Professor of theoretical physics, and school President, Durango Palacio-Earle; Defense Coach and Professor of Computer Science, Kekoa Alualu; and Special Teams Coach and Professor of Engineering, Robbie O'Arragan. They were soon joined by Student Assistant Coach, Peggy Adams, and a surprise guest, her Father, the former Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Lineman whose name is not Harvey.
Despite the Groucho mask that AKA Harvey wore at last year's Sac Valley game, Coach Dornfeld had recognized him. Just before the cops showed up at the Nut Tree game film exchange, he pointed out that: "As far as I know there are no former Steelers officially on your coaching roster".
But as far as Griff knew, there were no NCAA rules regarding with whom his coaches ate lunch. Durango ordered a pitcher of beer. The house specialty on that day was prime rib and Yorkshire pudding. Not much talking initially occurred.
"The Sacramento Valley Harriers are known for the size and strength of their farm-bred players." Durango rephrased the words he uttered at last year’s pre-Sac Valley Harriers game lunch. "A concern continues that Sac Valley has been giving a number of agriculture science scholarships to very large young men, who were high school football heroes."
"After lunch," Griff suggested "let's retire to the film room and watch the tape that Coach Dornfeld gave me. I have already watched it myself. In our game against the Pacific Ocean Conservatory of Music, because Mira, Durango's flutist wife, teaches at this school, we were careful not to injure their violin-playing quarterback, but I am sorry to say that Coach Dornfeld's team was not as restrained."
