On a table beside a beach house window, a celebratory champagne brunch was underway: cheese souffle. beacon, sausages, bread from the French deli near Caydance s studio on Telegraph Hill, pears from Mendocino. The souffle was perfect. The champagne was from Reims, not far from Jack and Giselle's home. Griff poured champagne into gold-rimmed La Rochere glasses, loaded his plate with souffle, bacon, and sausages. It was not, Caydance thought, a time to talk about the fate of Ted Treharne, although it was on her mind.

"What has been learned about the fate of Ted Treharne?", Griff asked.

"In December of 1944, Captain Theodore Sinclair Treharne was listed Missing in Action during the Battle of the Bulge. His body has never been found."

arrow "Not what I wanted to hear. For some reason, Ted has been on my mind."

"There is that painting, identified by Nico as Utah Beach years after the invasion, thought by Kendrick to be by Treharne himself. Why does it hang on the wall of the workshop? Jack's theory is that it was put there by a fellow soldier. I would rather believe that Ted painted it himself, came in through the window, and hung that painting on the wall.
