"Every time we thought that he would be on leave soon, and we could see each other", Susanna told Caydance on the telephone, "Ted was transferred to somewhere remote -- like from the Mojave Desert to the highlands of Scotland. But until April of 1944, letters came as often as he could write. About then, letters fom Ted no longer arrived. I know now that in the Spring of 1944 when the entire Army was assembling for D-day, because secrecy was enforced, soldiers could not write home. And I know now how many men died in the battle for Normandy and how many more were wounded or missing in action."

"When did you find out that Ted was officially 'Missing in Action?'" The silence on the telephone was so long that Caydance thought that somehow they had been cut off mid-conversation. "Susanna, are you still there?"

"Officially 'Missing in Action'? This is the first time in the years since I last saw Ted that anyone has told me his disappearance was official. I know the number of years because that is now the age of my son. Maybe Ted's Grandfather would have been told what happened to Ted. But his Grandfather died not long after D-Day.
